Embargo Act
The Embargo Act of 1807 was an act passed by the US that restricted all international trade coming into or out of the US.
The Embargo act was a result of the Chesapeake Incident.
The Chesapeake incident was a nautical battle between the British (HMS Leopard) and the United States (USS Chesapeake). This naval engagement was fought off the coast of Richmond, VA. The British boarded and attacked the USS Chesapeake because they were in search of those who deserted the Royal Navy. Americans were forced to surrender to the British. The Chesapeake was sent home after members of the crew were tied up and left for desertion.
This caused an uproar in the US. Many wanted to go to war with the British. Jefferson wanted the US to remain neutral so he tired non-violently threatening the British to no avail.
The British and French were a threat to US neutrality and with the British resulting to imprisonment and battles we had to do something. The decision was made to pass The Embargo Act.
The Embargo Act made the US stop all trade with other countries with the hope of having the fighting countries (Britain and France) stop restricting American trade.
The embargo act backfired and the American people were negatively affected. Many American businesses relied on exporting goods. The embargo act would not allow them to do that. Eventually the act was repealed and replaced with the Nonintercourse Act. The Nonintercourse Act allowed the US to trade with any country other than Britain and France.
